The Story of Us

1978

I, James Wells Sr., got the motorcycle bug when my family moved to an Orchard Mesa neighborhood in Grand Junction, Colorado from California in Summer 1978. The neighbor kids rode dirtbikes instead of bicycles to get around and had access to thousands of BLM acres adjoining my neighborhood.

1979 -1980

At 12 years old, with $25.00 I borrowed from my mother, Joann Wells, I bought my first dirtbike, a nonrunning 1971 Hodaka ACE100 with bent front forks. 

With help and expertise from my father, Paul Wells, we repaired and restored it to rideable condition and discovered an interest in the process. I often frequented the Mesa County landfill to find discarded motorcycles and snowmobiles to fix and sell. Eventually, I moved on, using classified ads to feed the need – haha! 

I developed skills to restore, buy, and sell dirtbikes, snowmobiles, and ATVs in my parents’ garage. Using classified ads helped pay for my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Mesa State College. Now known as Colorado Mesa University, in Grand Junction, Colorado. In 1986, Jacki Legg became a big part of the dream with the same enthusiasm for motorsports as myself. 

1991 - 2005

In April of 1991, Jacki and I were seniors in college, and together we drafted a small business plan for a requirement of a senior emphasis project in a small business course. The business concept was Colorado All Terrain Recreation.

In the Spring of 1991, we graduated from college with Bachelor’s degrees, and that summer we wed and began an incredible adventure. Neither of us knew the direction we would head, other than we would do it together. Good jobs for college graduates in Grand Junction were scarce at the time, but we were determined to stay in the Grand Valley. We held down various jobs for two years with little prospects of career employment. With a house payment and first child, Chelsea on the way in 1993, we took the plunge in to small business by starting a used off-road powersports shop with a little money, love and support from family, and $30,000 in credit card debt to secure the $300 per month retail location at 3098 I-70 Business Loop, Grand Junction, all based on a college plan drafted two years prior, from the passion we both had for powersports. The new business was All-Terrain Motorsports.

In 1995, with two more kids, James Jr. and Courtney, we began renting ATV’s, personal watercraft (PWC’s), and snowmobiles in addition to retail parts, used offroad vehicle sales, and service. 

In 1998, we moved to a new location at 3080 I-70 Business Loop, just a couple of blocks from where it all began. We built a new building and dedicated it to a good friend and first employee, Kyle Widows, who was tragically killed motocross racing prior to the relocation.

After selling various new “off” brands of Chinese and Italian motorcycles/ATV’s, All-Terrain got a lucky break and was set-up as franchised a Yamaha ATV/generator dealer. In 2000, we ceased renting and selling “off” brand units and dedicated all resources to selling and servicing Yamaha and used powersports products.

In 2001, we purchased Hilltop Yamaha/Arctic Cat in Delta, Colorado and operated that store until it sold in 2011.

In 2005, we purchased Sport Center of Grand Junction which sold Kawasaki, Bombardier, and SkiDoo powersports vehicles from the Hunt family. Brandon Hunt still works for us to this day. Thanks Brandon! Wow, 20 years and counting! 

2016

In 2016, we purchased Grand Valley Powersports which sold Yamaha, Suzuki, and Polaris powersports vehicles. Husqvarna motorcycles were also added at this time.

2017 - 2018

All-Terrain Motorsports expanded to include over 12,000 square feet of sales and parts floor, and 7,500 square feet of service department on nearly 4 acres, including the outdoor sales lot, at 3080 and 3090 I-70 Business Loop. We employed nearly 40 people at the time with most of them employed for more than a decade.

Indian Motorcycles franchise was acquired and All-Terrain became the first dealer for the brand on the Western Slope in decades. Indian has its own dedicated space and is known as Indian Motorcycles of Grand Junction. 

2021

After 27 years, All-Terrain Motorsports moved from the east side of the Grand Valley to the west side next to Home Depot and Mesa Mall. With 60,000+ square feet, the facility is unmatched by most powersports dealers in the US, with a distinct multi-level shopping experience. This is one of the few powersport dealerships nationwide to have a complete lifestyle department dedicated to Fox™ and Klim™ riding apparel along with other brands. The experience is well worth the price of admission, FREE! 

2021 - 2022

After setting the stage with an amazing building, we added Triumph motorcycles to our stable, as Triumph Grand Junction. We showcase all Triumph motorcycles from classic to cutting edge, including the all-new MX/offroad lineup.

In 2022, we added a complete unit assembly department on 5 acres nearby the main store to streamline our availability for all models of every brand we represent. 

2023

In 2023, we acquired RPM Powersports in Rifle, Colorado and plan on continuing the outstanding customer service Kyle and April Costanzo provided Garfield and adjoining counties for the past 30 years. Our team will provide the best experience in the business with an all new showroom and service department. We expanded parts and service options for customers, which included adding the GasGas motorcycle brand to the existing BRP offerings. 

2024

7,500 square feet of “Retail Experience” was added to the Northeast corner of our building in Grand Junction. This showcases two-wheeled offroad, adventure, and enduro models alongside accessories and apparel to suit your needs. We also acquired the assets of Motohouse Grand Junction, formally All-Sports Honda and Perri’s Powersports. All-Terrain is now your new dealer for Honda, Ducati, CF Moto, Beta and Sherco. Additionally, Arctic Cat is offered at our store in Rifle.

2025

Every year, for over 30 years, we have invested in our growth to better support all of you who support us as your one-stop-shop and go-to dealership for everything powersports. We now employ over 75 powersports professionals with many of the same faces you have grown up with and still providing the same great customer service you expect. 

We are your hometown dealership no matter where you live! The facilities equal 70,000+ square feet on 13+ acres with a “mall like” atmosphere, yet “mom and pop” style. No big “dealer group” here, just your friends who happen to own a regional dealership. One that was built as a 30+ year testament to our commitment to customer satisfaction and support to our always growing powersport community.
